Deutsche Welle (DW) Documentaries and Reports: IN FOCUS Program newest broadcast, titled “Bringers of Death – Assisted Suicide in Germany,” is a comprehensive report of the current ethical dilemmas Physicians in Germany face concerning those who suffer with chronic illness.
This film focuses on the patients who see no alternative to ending their own lives and also listens to passionate opponents of assisted suicide.
The program highlights patient Medical and Mental Health histories with discussion on justifications whether to assist in patient’s end of life decisions beyond Palliative Care and Germany’s current legal restrictions to do so.
The program makes clear there are currently no legal restrictions preventing Physicians from participating in their patients desire to end life, yet the moral and ethical components clearly present, have led to Germany’s Professional Association governing Physician care to intervene and investigate those who participate by accepting monetary compensation [ payment ] for these quite specific end of life services.
I recommend a viewing of this program. See IN FOCUS Television broadcast schedule below for next air time in your time zone.
At the age of 64 Mrs. K. has been diagnosed with terminal cancer. Now she wants to take fate into her own hands. She doesn’t want to suffer any longer and has chosen to end her own life. A doctor is going to assist her secretly by administering a fatal drug. The patient hopes that this option will prevent prolonged suffering and allow her to have a self-determined and, as she says, “dignified” death. The doctor who is helping her risks massive repercussions. Although it is not a crime in Germany to help a mentally sound person commit suicide, the professional rules of conduct for the medical profession prohibit it. And yet, it happens – in a legal and ethical grey area. This film focuses on the patients who see no alternative to ending their own lives and also listens to passionate opponents of assisted suicide. (2014, Deutsche Welle).
